“I see the doorway (in your eyes)“

It’s always exhilarating to see the development of a young artist’s personal language and it’s a great pleasure for me to discover and help organize Ville Omuse’s first exhibition at The Brick in Brooklyn.
The works in the exhibition span about a year (made between 2021-22). The most recent is a drawing of an eye with trees as lashes and in a way distills many of the works made before it.
Ville is self-taught and makes art from his experiences and observations, rendered in a variety of styles, most recently realism that also evokes surrealism and most notably the work of René Magritte and specifically his works such as The False Mirror 1929 and The Listening Room 1952. Ville’s work also bring to mind the early drawings and paintings of artist Robert Gober.
Ville states:
“There is so much depth to an eye, with so many different elements that need to play perfectly together to make an eye expressive”
Ville Omuse is creating portals to images of his world – in his eyes.
